A monument of independence
Independence Square
The Independence Square was built to commemorate the formal ceremony of Sri Lanka’s independence from British colonial rule on 4th February 1948. Located in Cinnamon Gardens, Independence Square is located approximately 3 km away from Granbell Hotel.

The open-sided hall is adorned with beautifully carved columns and a tiled roof that was inspired by the last Kandyan Kingdom. There are several statues of seated lions surrounding the hall too. You can also visit the Memorial Museum located below the Memorial Hall.
The manicured gardens around the Memorial Hall are often used by locals for recreational activities in the mornings and evenings.
